"Honoring BIWOC who go above and beyond in their support of others."

This award recognizes Sangeetha Kowsik’s leadership in design, interfaith engagement, cultural representation, and advocacy. As Founder of the NYU Hindu Center, Hindu Chaplain, and former Head Designer at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, her work brings together art, scholarship, faith, and creative practice.

At The Met, she established an internship and mentorship program supporting women of color and international students and successfully advocated for the interns to be paid, expanding both access and equity within the museum's creative departments.

Her continued work across museums, education, and interfaith spaces reflects a commitment to representation, mentorship, and creating opportunities for communities historically underrepresented in these fields.

Guided by the Hindu principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam “The world is one family” her work is rooted in education, compassion, and meaningful change.

USTADH ZAKIR HUSSAIN

“Subhanallah” Tabla | Art, Music & Interfaith Unity

My “Subhanallah” Tabla design was created as a celebration of music, faith, and unity, using Arabic calligraphy to transform the tabla into a symbol of connection between Hindu and Muslim communities.

During the pandemic, I had the honor of presenting the design to legendary tabla maestro Ustadh Zakir Hussain. Zakir Ji embraced the work and its message, proudly wearing the design while performing on Instagram Live and expressing his appreciation for its spirit of Hindu-Muslim unity.

When we later met in person, I shared more about my work as a Hindu Chaplain, artist, and Arabic calligrapher, and my commitment to bringing communities together through art and design. He was especially moved by the interfaith meaning behind the work and by the fact that the “Subhanallah” Tabla artwork is displayed at NYU near the Islamic Center.

His encouragement and blessing of my work remain deeply meaningful to me. The tabla has always represented something larger than an instrument: music has the power to transcend religious and cultural boundaries and bring people together.
