CONCEPT :
The marigold is widely associated with India today, yet it was originally cultivated in Mexico by the Aztec civilization before traveling across the world through centuries of exchange.
One of the greatest misconceptions about Hinduism is that its traditions are practiced uniformly, in reality, worship varies significantly across regions, languages, and communities. Marigolds, commonly offered in North Indian temples, are prohibited in South Indian temples and other South Indian houses of worship, including churches, mosques, and dargahs, where they are reserved for decoration rather than worship.
Temples and houses of worship are associated with happiness and peace, so anything evoking death or mourning is excluded, with ancestor reverence observed with far greater importance in South Indian tradition.
This exclusion echoes marigold's role in Mexico's Day of the Dead, where the flower similarly honors the deceased rather than the divine and reflects a broader pattern in South India, where different faiths often visit one another's places of worship, a sign of regional interconnectedness that cuts across religious lines.
This original textile design celebrates that rich diversity. Vibrant marigolds are paired with hand-selected roses from my own garden, flowers woven into Hindu puja (prayer rituals) garlands and cherished for their fragrance, beauty, and devotion.
Drawing upon museum research, lived experience, and Faith & Culture Intelligence, the design transforms a floral pattern into a meaningful story about cultural exchange, regional traditions, and the extraordinary diversity found within Hinduism itself.
